This is my first attempt at composing a Sonata for Guitar.
I plan to compose more Sonatas this year.
I wanted to round out my classical by doing some renaissance music. This is a piece by John Dowland (1563-1626) Although it’s short, I really like it. Hopefully I’ll have time to explore more of his music in the future.

Here are some of the results from my recent session at Beehive Sound Studio in Snohomish, WA. The crew there did a great job recording some of the sweet sounds that come out of Ko-no-hana (my name for the classical guitar I use for recording).
These are 5 original compositions, for which you can find the sheet music for on my sheet music page.
When my wife was a teenager, she heard this piece of music on a Breck Shampoo commercial. She just loved the music, but had no idea who the composer was or what the name of the piece was. Occasionally when she would go into music stores and she would hum the music in hopes that someone would know what it was. Finally almost 20 years later, she found someone in a music store who knew the piece was by Erik Satie. Upon further research she learned that Erik Satie was from Honfleur, a seaside town she had visited when she lived in Normandy, France.
A couple of years ago, I saw a documentary on the life of Julian Bream. As the story goes, this piece is one that he first performed for a guitar society when he was a teenager, and was the start of his performing career. It is also a common piece of music to study for classical guitarists. It was featured as music for the documentary and I thought it was interesting that after a career of 50 years that Julian still practiced and played it. Anyway it inspired me to learn it. I’ve been performing it for a while, but just got around to recording it.

I really always wanted to play this, even back in my younger days when I was a piano student. This version was arranged for guitar by Joe Harris. Used by permission.
